I have a pop account. I want Thunderbird to delete messages from the Google website when I download them to my MacBook computer because when I open mail on my iPad or iPhone all the messages appear and I have to delete them one by one. Thanks Bruce McAllister

Check the settings for your POP account and make sure the option 'Leave messages on the server' is not checked.

The flip side is, you'll never see those messages on the other devices, when they are opened on the MacBook computer first.

Therefore, when using multiple devices to retrieve mail, IMAP is the more elegant solution.
