Are the attachments images or simple text files and they display below the actual email? If yes, then perhap you have 'Display Attachments Inline' selected. 'View' > 'Display Attachments Inline'. select again to uncheck that option.

It is not selected by default, so if it is selected, then you must have done this at some point.

Perfect! They were .htm files and your suggestion worked perfectly..I have had a learining transition to thunderbird from Windows Mail on W10 (awful)so I am sure I did check it unknowlingly and think I am going to like it. Do you know if my Norton scans this email program automatically or do I have to so something in the Thurderbird program ?

I have Norton (NIS) and it does scan email, both incoming and outgoing.

This is set up here: Open norton click on 'Settings' click on 'Anti-virus' select 'Scans and risks' tab 'Email Anti-Virus Scan'- click on 'configure + '

This section allows you to choose whether to scan incoming / outgoing emails.
