If I open a new tab and try and load any url it won't load - conversely if I rightclick a link to open a new tab and then c/p a url from a homepage tab it will?

Weirdest thing ever... I have three homepage tabs in firefox. I've been using firefox for ages. Just updated to v 56 - now the only tabs that will open are my homepages. OR any link I open from my homepage tab; including if I open it in a new tab.

Stranger still, if I then type a URL in the new tab that was created IT will load. However if I try (before or after this) to 'ctrl+t' for a new tab and type the exact same url it will not load.

No idea what is happening. Has anyone seen this before or know why it is happening?

Your MEGA 3.16.1 extension is probably causing that problem for you. Other users of that extension have already reported that issue with Firefox 56. Mega needs to fix their extension.

Having more than one version of a program may cause issues. You must remove the older programs. Then get the current full installer.

Flash: Grab the uninstaller from here:

http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html Uninstall Flash Player | Windows

http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-mac-os.html Uninstall Flash Player | Mac

Then reinstall the latest version.

Note: Windows users should download the active_x for Internet Explorer. and the plugin for Plugin-based browsers (like Firefox).

Note: Windows 8 and Windows 10 have built-in flash players and Adobe will cause a conflict. Install the plugin only. Not the active_x.
