I'd like to ask whether the FF for Android team plans to implement an "Open in Reader View" option for the link context menu and if not - when is the FF API for Android going to allow for the creation of add-ons that can implement such an option. In the times before FF Quantum I created an add-on for this purpose but now it's impossible. I found a discussion of this problem in Reddit on this url:

https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/aj0w9h/reader_mode_firefox_android_addon_developers/

I do realize this may not be the right place to post this question. I'm sorry but there are so many FF forums (and separate logins), that it's hard to decide whether I should post it here, on the development forum or elsewhere...

Love Firefox!

Regards

Hi

Great to hear that you like using Firefox for Android!

Firefox for Android does have a Reader View. You can read more about it here.

If you have a question for the Add-ons team, try this forum:

https://discourse.mozilla.org/c/add-ons

But more generally, Firefox doesn't offer reader view unless the format of the page meets certain requirements. So I don't think Firefox will get a link context menu entry to open a link in reader view because at that time, it isn't possible to know whether the page CAN be opened in reader view.

jscher2000, thank you for your reply. I do not agree, however, that for such an option to be added to the context menu, Firefox must know in advance whether it can open the link in Reader View or not. Generally when you click on a link on the web you are taking a chance - the browser does not know and does not warn you beforehand whether the web page will open or throw a 404 error, whether it will render properly or not. The "Open in Reader View" option would of course be used mostly on sites on which you KNOW (because you've tested) it will work - your favorite news sites for example. And there are also the cases in which Firefox shows the Reader View icon but the function doesn't render the view properly - especially on infinite scroll sites. So there is a common sense factor to using such a function - and to using the web in general.

Hi,

The people who answer questions here, for the most part, are other Firefox users volunteering their time (like us), not Mozilla employees or Firefox developers.

If you want to leave feedback for Firefox developers, you can go to the Firefox Help menu and select Submit Feedback... or use this link. Your feedback gets collected by a team of people who read it and gather data about the most common issues.
