It use to be after deleting an email it would return to Inbox to next message. Now all of a sudden it takes me back to Inbox but to a random spot/message never the next email. Very frustrating when several hundred emails and have to click several hundred times to open next email.

What is the sort order of Inbox? Are the emails sorted in Date order with newest on top of list? Check the sort order and report back on what you are using.

Suggest you try repairing the folder to see if this is an indexing issue.

  • Right clickon Inbox folder and select 'Properties'
  • click on 'Repair Folder' button
  • click on 'OK'

If this fixes the situation then please post info.

How often do you compact folders? As you are seeing unusual behaviour in Inbox.... If you have not compacted Inbox in a while, then suggest you do the following just in case there is some corruption in the Inbox file.

  • Create suitable folders.
  • Move all good wanted emails out of Inbox into folders for organising and storage.
  • delete anything you do not want.
  • When Inbox is empty, right click on Inbox folder and select 'Compact'
  • Empty the Junk folder and compact that folder as well.
  • Compact the 'Drafts' folder.

Additional: suggest you keep the Inbox for new incoming emails or emails that need organising. Recommend you do not use the Inbox as a general storage. 'Keep it working' is good general helpful info how to keep a healthy Thunderbird:

If you have followed all info, but still experiencing a problem: Start Thunderbird in 'Safe Mode' and see if you still get issues.

Please report back on what happens in Safe Mode.

What Operating System are you using ? What version of Thunderbird are you using?

I have this problem too. It just arose out of the blue. It does not matter how many times I delete emails from the inbox. They then repopulate in the inbox after deletion.

I repaired the inbox to no avail. I compacted the inbox to no avail. I don't want to monkey around deleting emails out the inbox and restoring it.

I want, of course, for Thunderbird to start working again as designed and intended.

Can someone help?

Thank you.
