New email notification is not actually showing the new email
I have several accounts (all IMAP) setup in Thunderbird. I leave some of them unread. When a new email arrives then I do get the new email notification popup (good), but the popup shows 1-4 of the old unread email subjects, and none of the actually new emails that just arrived. If I mark all emails in all accounts as "read", then when a new email arrives the popup does correctly show the subject of the new email.
This has been happening for as long as I can remember (10 years at least) ... it doesn't matter if I use regular check or if I enable the "allow immediate server notification when new email arrives". I'm now quite bugged about it as I receive increasingly more email and I have to manually switch to the Thunderbird window, and flip through folders to see which one actually has just received new email. Time consuming and Irritating.
Happens on both Windows and MacOSX. Using latest version v60.9.1.
Any clues?

When I read your message, the question is whether we can do something about how a popup window could be set up so that old mails .. unread no longer come offer but constantly the newest mail only?
is this correct?
It is automatically built into Firefox.
Disabling this could be harmful to incoming web pages from important organizations -websites , for example, they also mainly use this.
But this is possible.
For Firefox Windows-Mac?.
To completely disable the pop-up blocker, go to Tools > Options > Content and uncheck Block pop-up windows
You can uncheck the Block Pop up windows Under Firefox Orange Button > Options > Options > Content Tab.
For Thunderbird
By default, Thunderbird will notify you of new mail via a pop-up box.
If you don't want to be notified in this way, click Tools > Options > General. Uncheck either or both boxes for Show an alert or Play a sound. Then click OK.
Note: Even if you uncheck both boxes, Thunderbird will still display the small envelope icon in the lower right of your screen.
If you do want to show alerts, but want to limit the kind of information displayed, click Customize and check only what you want to see. Click OK, then exit Options.

(P.s Apple has decided that this must be done through the OS notification of sounds and not through Thunderbird.)

My question is about Thunderbird, not Firefox.
A "new email notification" should be showing exactly that, i.e. new emails ... not old emails.

I don't know where TB stores the information that determines which messages are displayed in the new mail notification popup, but in the meantime, I suggest you create a new profile, add one IMAP account, and see if the problem remains with this new, unadorned profile.
To start Profile Manager, close TB, Winkey+R, type thunderbird.exe -p
The current profile is untouched and can be accessed anytime through Profile Manager.
