How do I turn off the annoying and useless "locating and installing" message?

How do I turn off the annoying and useless "locating and installing" message?

That looks like a pop-up with instructions about how to proceed with downloading and installing this software. Most websites assume that the user is experienced enough, but Canon apparently gives more precise instructions. Firefox won't allow to download and run .exe files for security reaons, so you only get the usual Firefox window to download and save this .exe file. You can save the file to the desktop for easy access or to another location and double-click the file to run this installer. So nothing unusual here.

Can you attach a screenshot?

Hi Cor-el, Thanks for looking into this for me. I've attached a screen shot which shows the message. I'm surprised that you haven't seen it when you download something. Or maybe you don't you download things very often. Or maybe I'm just not seeing an option box that I can un-check. Regards,

  Jerry

What is that download? Did you select to download, or download and run?

Hi FredMcD and cor-el,

The download is drivers for a Canon MX922 printer.

It comes from URL:

"https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/details/printers/inkjet-multifunction/mx-series-inkjet/mx922/pixma-mx922?tab=drivers_downloads". The file name is "mp68-win-mx920-1_01-ea32_2.exe". It is described as: "MX920 series MP Drivers Ver.1.01 (Windows)".

I clicked the "DOWNLOAD" button, and got the result you see in my screen shot. If there is a "Download and Run" button, I didn't find it.

Just now, I tried some other ".exe" downloads for different programs . They didn't give me the "locating and installing" message, or any other messages except the Windows "Save / Cancel" dialog. The Canon download is the only one I've see that triggers the extra message.

Here's a chilling thought: Maybe Canon knows how to add graphic elements to my screen without asking me. If so, I have to ask (1) how do they do that, and (2) what else can they do.

Any comments?
