I can no longer send email from my Thunderbird POP gmail account. I can receive but not send. When I try to send, Thunderbird immediately gives me an alert reading "An error occurred while sending mail: The mail server sent an incorrect greeting: +OK Gpop ready for requests from [my ip address] k16mb102005795ool." (The numbers following my ip address are always different.) I am using Windows 10. I have been using Thunderbird for many, many years and have never had a problem. I have several other email addresses on Thunderbird but they are all IMAP - and they all continue to work just fine.

Thank you most sincerely in advance for your help.

I presume your pop gmail account is actually using the gmail smtp server when sending emails ?

Are you using the following smtp server settings:

  • Description: Gmail email address
  • Server Name: smtp.gmail.com
  • Port : 465
  • User name : full gmail email address
  • Authentication Method: Normal Password'
  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS

I'm surprised you have not as yet been auto blocked by gmail because you have a POP account. Gmail will periodically block access to gmail for anyone still using the less secure apps option and this is deliberate. They claim they are checking you really are you for your protection because what they would prefer is you recreate the account as an IMAP account and use Authentication Method : OAuth2.

So check this out first: Logon to your gmail webmail account using a browser and check/ reset the option to use 'less secure apps'.

Thank you sincerely for your reply. When I edited my outgoing server for this account, I found to my horror that the SMTP port was set at 995. I changed it back to 465 and voila!, the problem was solved.

Yes the POP account is an old one, but a heavily used one. I wish there were a way to convert it to an IMAP account and retain the name but I can't figure out how to do it.

Again, sincerest thanks.
