Bookmarks and history not displaying in sidebar or library in Firefox (98.0.2 (64-bit) on Win11. I can see them when i save an individual bookmark (cntrl d) but not in the aforementioned areas. I have tried importing an earlier saved set from the library dropdown but they still are invisible. I also use "Bookmark search plus 2" add-on where I can still see all of my bookmarks.

Note that in Firefox 96 and newer you can right-click a bookmark search result and click "Show in Folder" to locate a bookmark in the folder list.

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

This could be a problem with the places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use the "Places Database" -> "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page

If errors are reported with "Verify Integrity", close and restart Firefox or reboot and retry.

If "Verify Integrity" cannot repair places.sqlite, rename/remove all places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

  • keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created
  • you lose the history when a new places.sqlite is created

You may have to restore an older bookmarks backup in the bookmarkbackups folder via the Bookmarks Manager (Library).

You can use the button on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page (Root directory).

Thanks for that thorough explanation. I did move the "sqlites" to an "old" folder and upon opening Firefox saw that they had been replaced by new ones. But no joy. Then I restored bookmarks from an earlier set. No joy. Then I went to the 'about-profiles" page and restarted with add-ons disabled". JOY. Then I enable add-ons and my bookmarks were still there! JOY JOY. But History, as you mentioned, had been erased. Less joy, but I will live. Thanks for the fine walk-through for a fix.
