ESET Internet Security has an option to open certain sites such as financial sites in a secure browser. The sites have to be specified in a protected websites list but otherwise going to those sites automatically opens up a secured browser as long as the sites are https sites.

This worked until recently (within the last couple/few months). I just spent an hour and a half with the ESET support chat and we narrowed it down to Firefox.

When setting Edge as the default browser the sites open in the protected browser just fine. But when Firefox is set as default the browser redirection doesn't work.

I suspect this is mostly going to be on ESET to fix but I was wondering if anyone else had seen this happening and was aware of a fix. This is happening on all of my family's PCs that run Firefox (6).

Secure browser automatically works fine when using Edge but not when using FF.

Remind me how this works... For example, you're on a page of Google results and you click a link to a site you have designated to be run in the secure browser. Instead of that page opening normally in Firefox, it is opened in the ESET secure browser?

That sounds like something an add-on (a browser extension) needs to handle. As a starting point, did ESET help you check whether their add-on is installed and enabled?

There are no ESET addons or plugins installed into FF. As best I understand it, when you have the Internet Security option enabled, ESET monitors your internet traffic and if it detects a financial site, or a site listed in the redirect list it opens up a secured browser page within your default browser.

The option works fine when Edge is the default browser but doesn't work with Firefox unless I select the option within ESET to secure ALL browser activity in which case the secure browser opens for everything.

I understand that this is an ESET problem, I'm just wondering if anyone else has seen this and if so, perhaps they too could start a ticket with ESET. Or, if they found a fix they could share it.

The ESET support tech went through everything after I gave him rights to control my PC. He checked for installed plugins in FF, reset FF including unloading all plugins, I even did a complete uninstall and reinstall of FF to see if perhaps an update just didn't take. No joy.

Once we made Edge the default browser it worked in Edge. When we went back to Firefox and made it the default browser, it didn't work. So, his final determination was that there was a problem between ESET and FF. That's the best he could do.

Hmm, I wonder how it monitors your web traffic... In case DNS requests are relevant, try turning DNS over HTTPS off. This article has the steps: Firefox DNS-over-HTTPS.

It appears that article is slightly out of date as the pics don't reflect the current settings options but I found the option you recommended. I made sure it was turned off, restarted the browser, still no website redirection.

Hmm, can you tell whether ESET is intercepting any Firefox requests, for example, for filtering malicious content?

I wouldn't know how. Most malicious or dangerous sites I think are being intercepted by Firefox.
