On two occasions all of the favicons for my Bookmarks have disappeared. The only way I have been able to restore them is to open each bookmark using "Open All in Tabs" for each Bookmark folder. As I have many hundreds of Bookmarks, this is an extremely time consuming process. I have done this twice. I have just encountered a third instance of this problem and would like to avoid doing it again if there is any other way to restore the favicons.

I had saved the favicons.sqlite files from the Profile, but I am unaware of any way to restore the favicons directly from this file. The favicons.sqlite file appears to be of the proper size, i.e. ~17KB. On the last occasion, following a suggested solution, I rebuilt the iconcache hoping it would also rebuild the favicons, but that was not the case. As a result, I used the above process.

Any solutions to restore the Bookmark favicons without opening all with "Open All in Tabs" would be greatly apprecuated. I don't know what has caused the favicons to disappear. I am running Firefox 129.0.2 on a Windows 11 Pro PC.

TechHorse, many thanks for the reply. Mea culpa. I found out what I was doing wrong before which prevented restoration of the favicons. Rather embarrassing on my part.

BTW, I have been using "Open All in Tabs" on a folder by folder basis because I didn't want to open a thousand tabs at once. Doing it folder by folder allowed me to open that folder and confirm, edit, or rearrange the favicons to ensure that they were all as I wanted them to be.

Allan, if you have a backup of favicons.sqlite then all you should need to do is copy this one file back into the profile folder, while Firefox is not running.

Also, if you ever need to open all bookmarks again, then you can open the bookmarks sidebar and enter a space into the search box, and this should list all bookmarks. You can then select them all in one go, right-click and select "Open All Bookmarks".

Note that the file size of a SQLite database file like favicons.sqlite isn't meaning much as such database file usually have (fixed) minimum file size. You would have to inspect the file with a SQLite viewer utility to see what data is in the file.

Firefox upgraded me from Version 129.0.2 to Version 130 which made all my displayed bookmarks disappear.

I am running WIN 10 on a HP all in 1 desktop.

Any suggestions?

Firefox automatically creates backups of your bookmarks, which can be helpful if your bookmarks are lost or missing. To recover them, follow the instructions below.

Click the Library icon, then click Bookmarks.
Scroll to the bottom and click Show All Bookmarks.
At the top of the Library window, click on Import and Backup and select Restore.
Click the date of the bookmark backup you want to recover.
In the new window that appears, click OK.

Your bookmarks from the selected date should now be restored.

Allan, glad that you got it working. Just wondering, was the solution to copy the backed up favicons.sqlite file from the backup folder to the profile folder, or did you find another way?

TechHorse The solution was copying a backup favicons.sqlite file to the profile folder, as you suggested.

The "rather embarrassing" part is that I couldn't get it to work because, in transferring from an old Windows 8.1 PC to a new Windows 11 PC, Firefox created a new profile. I unknowingly was copying the backup favicons.sqlite file to the old inactive profile retained in App Data. What clued me in was entering "about:profiles" and seeing my active profile.
