When on a secured site, there should be a lock symbol on your Status Bar at the bottom of your browser window. Is the Status Bar displayed? Click View in the Menu Bar/Main menu, if no check mark next to Status Bar, click on Status Bar to place and check mark and display the Status Bar.

Firefox also has the Site Identity Button on the left end of the Location/URL button that changes color based on the security level/information for the site. See: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Site+Identity+Button ~~red:and~~ dria.org » Blog Archive » Firefox 3: Site Identification button
