All history items and bookmarks are stored in a SQLite database file called places.sqlite in the Firefox Profile Folder

You can select to show nothing if you do not want to see a drop down list in the location bar:

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Location Bar: When using the location bar, suggest: Nothing
