I am a senior citizen and need text that is at least size 18 often when I enlarge it to size 18 it extends beyond the margins and I can't read it without scrolling back and forth. Is there a remedy?

Try using the NoSquint add-on to adjust the zoom levels for text.

I don't know about Mac's, but on Windows versions of Firefox there is a Zoom Text Only option in the View menu.
View > Zoom > Zoom Text Only
