more options

This is a possible fix for some users. It worked for me when the about:config option did not stop the popup.

Check your plug-ins for one called Metastream. If it's there you can just disable it and the problem will go away.

If you want to remove it, you have a couple of options.

First look for a program called Viewpoint Player. You may have had this years ago (mine was 2004), and uninstalled it already. The files are still active.

Look for it in the add / remove programs area first. If it's there, uninstall it. This program was not listed on my system.

If it's not there, the goto (in XP), Program Files\Viewpoint and delete everything in that folder, then delete the folder.

If the plugin still is present, goto Program Files\Firefox\plugins and delete the 2 files with viewpoint in their names.

This should clean up the flag that makes your Firefox start the plugin tab.

Hope this helps a few people out there.
