I have Firefox set for auto update. I am currently running 6.0.2. I see 7.0.1 is available. Will it automatically update from 6.x to 7.x?

I have Firefox set for auto update. I am currently running 6.0.2. I see 7.0.1 is available. Will it automatically update from 6.x to 7.x? Before Mozilla started with frequent major version changes, it didn't. But now, I can't update FF on all the PCs I support every 6 weeks.

I know 3.6 is not updating automatically past 3.6.23, soon to be 3.6.24. and that a update to 7.x was to have been optionally offered, but was postponed: http://christian.legnitto.com/blog/2011/10/03/reminder-firefox-3-6-23-7-0-1-advertised-update-scheduled-for-thursday/

Firefox 4, 5, & 6 are EOL and no longer supported or considered secure, I am not sure what the position is with their updates.

You may be interested in proposals for a longer term release (ESR) as mentioned in the linked blog.

You can get the latest release manually and install it manually. That will work for sure. Pick the one you want from this page:

Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure my question was answered. With 3.6.x it would automatically update from (for example) 3.6.5 to 3.6.6 to 3.6.7, etc. Should FF update from 6.x to 7.x to 8.x, etc? My update options are set to automatically download and install. But I'm still on 6.0.2. I know I can manually download and install 7.x. I just want to know if it should update from 6.x to 7.x automatically.

You should have gotten an automatic update from Firefox 6.0.2 to 7.0 three weeks ago when Firefox 7.0 was released. Open Help > About Firefox, if the update doesn't automatically start hit the Check for Updates button, if it is there. And if the Check for Updates button is there, you probably have automatic update disabled. Check out Options > Advanced and see if it is off.

Thanks for help guys, I actually found that option under Toos/options/advance so I'm good now.

the-edmeister,

Help->About shows an "Apply Update" button and under that "You are currently on the release update channel."

Tools->Options->Advanced->Update has Automatically check for updates to: Firefox, Add-ons, Search Engines - all checked

When updates to Firefox are found: Automatically download and install the update - is selected Warn me if this will disable any of my ad-ons - is checked

It looks to me that the update was downloaded and ready to apply. But why didn't it do this automatically? As I said, I know I can manually install the update. My problem is I support 50+ PCs all running Firefox. I don't have time to manually update each one every 6 weeks.

Thanks again for the help.

I am guessing that the automatic updates was not set (or no internet, or update blocked etc) when the upgrade from 6 to 7 was offered. IF 6 behaves like 3.6 once the major update window is missed any subsequent updates offered will be to point upgrades. (Conjecture but maybe 6 to 7 had a narrow window because of the release of 7.0.1)

I am sure it is not Mozilla Firefox intention that updates must be done manually, quite the contrary, they are I understand moving towards automatic silent upgrades, by default.

They are also considering/proposing an alternative system for corporate/enterprise users see http://blog.mozilla.com/blog/2011/07/19/announing-mozilla-enterprise-user-working-group/

I hit the "Apply Update" button in Help->About. It closed FF and restated but it didn't do the update. I downloaded 7.0.1 and installed. Now Help->About shows 7.0.1, but Help->About still shows "Apply Update". Shouldn't it be "Check for Updates"?

I would expect it to be Check for Updates, as it should allow you to check manually and then display a message (if appropriate) that Firefox is up to date.

Is security software etc interfering with the update process. Currently firefox updates on restart (iirc that may change in the future), is something cleaning or clearing the update files before they can be used ?
