Why does my Firefox keep crashing?

more options

My Firefox keeps crashing. I've uninstalled it, reinstalled it, run it in safe mode, and nothing seems to prevent the crashing. I completely deleted all of the old Firefox files before reinstalling it, but even the fresh clean version keeps crashing. The crashes happen almost immediately. I open the browser, try to load a site, and the browser crashes within a few seconds.

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

You can use one of these to start Firefox in Safe mode:

  • On Windows, hold down the Shift key while starting Firefox with a double-click on the Firefox desktop shortcut
  • On Mac, hold down the Options key while starting Firefox
  • Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

If you have submitted crash reports then please post the IDs of one or more crash reports that have this format:

  • bp-xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx

You can find the IDs of the submitted crash reports on the about:crashes page.

  • You can open the about:crashes page via the location bar, like you open a website.

I have a similar problem Currently running Firefox 19

PC is a Dell Optiplex 780 and has Windows XP SP3

I am wondering if it has something to do with the amount or ram on PC. The Windows Task Manager performance constantly fluctuates between about 17 and 75% with Page File usage of 3.01-3.03 GB.

Generally have between 15 and 70 windows open at any one time. Could that also be a problem?

In the Processes tab Firefox shows as using 1,569,534K and this fluctuates all the time!

Here are my PC details:

BIOS Version/Date Dell Inc. A01, 01/09/2009 SMBIOS Version 2.5 Windows Directory C:\WINDOWS System Directory C:\WINDOWS\system32 Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume1 Locale United Kingdom Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = "5.1.2600.5512 (xpsp.080413-2111)" User Name KEITHTEST\Administrator Time Zone GMT Standard Time Total Physical Memory 4,096.00 MB Available Physical Memory 303.70 MB Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB Page File Space 5.05 GB Page File C:\pagefile.sys

My Firefox on my laptop was crashing too! I noticed when I reduced my tabs opened from 25-35 at a time to 10-20, things ran a whole lot faster and no crashes occurred. For me, I think it was too many tabs opened and perhaps reducing the amount of opened windows may assist you. Good Luck!
