It says it saves them in a separate file, but I don't want that. I want to continue to have them associated with the e-mail with which they arrived. Unless this can be done, I'm going to Outlook.

Your on the Thunderbird forum, that is because Eudora is dead, and the OSE version along with it.

So the simple answer here is disable the penelope add-on that makes it Eudora OSE (Attachment stripping is one of the fondest features of Eudora for long term Eudora users) and revert to plain Thunderbird then update from the totally unsupported version 3 (it is rubbish by the way, seriously unstable) to the current version 24. Or use Outlook, your choice of email client is your own. It has nothing to do with me!
