I would like to save my sent, and saved mail files in Thunderbird to a separate fine on my computer. I am no longer using the service provider that I set up the account with.

If you want to keep those emails visible:

Move emails into Local Folders.

If you have an IMAP mail account, synchronize folders for offline use, then in 'offline' mode, get a copy of emails into Local Folders.

If you have a POP mail account you can create a backup of the entire Profile using MozBackup tool. You could create a backup before moving anything (just in case :) and then another after moving. see info here:

You can also use ImportExportTool addon tool to save emails as .eml files; you can also use the same tool to import .eml files.

Then when all emails are in Local Folders you can remove the account.

  • Tools > Account Settings
  • select the mail account name
  • click on 'Account actions'
  • select 'Remove account'
  • click on OK
