Inbox folders not being created from msf files

Last week, I noticed that my Inbox folder files weren't appearing in my profile. I posted a generalized question here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/996903

The response I received didn't help that much. The folder I created appeared on the remote mailbox as empty folders.

My mail account is synced via IMAP to a remote Zimbra mail client using STARTTLS. I can view my Inbox. The other folders in my Inbox account are not visible. I can send and recieve messages from my INBOX.

When I select "Manage folder Subscriptions" In the account options, I can see the folders. When I select them, and click the "Subscribe" button, nothing happens. Inspecting my IMAP directory, I see the following structure:

~/.thunderbird/13zr0oo0.default/ImapMail/mail.<zimbra_account>.com: -rw-r--r-- 1 matthewe matthewe 1238 May 2 10:38 Archives.msf -rw-r--r-- 1 matthewe matthewe 1235 May 2 10:38 Drafts.msf -rw------- 1 matthewe matthewe 47500385 May 2 09:56 INBOX -rw-r--r-- 1 matthewe matthewe 375885 May 2 10:36 INBOX.msf -rw-r--r-- 1 matthewe matthewe 25 May 2 08:58 msgFilterRules.dat -rw-r--r-- 1 matthewe matthewe 1233 May 2 10:38 Sent.msf -rw-r--r-- 1 matthewe matthewe 0 May 2 10:38 site-errors.msf -rw-r--r-- 1 matthewe matthewe 0 May 2 09:59 Templates.msf -rw-r--r-- 1 matthewe matthewe 2275 May 2 10:33 Trash.msf

The msf files are created when I click the "Subscribe" button but subsequent Mail files containing the mail data are not (note that non-msf files exist only for "INBOX".) Removing .msf files and restarting Thunderbird has no affect. When I launch, the errors console reports the following three errors:

"Could not read chrome manifest 'file:///usr/lib/thunderbird/extensions/%7B972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd%7D/chrome.manifest'.

-- There is no chrome.manifest file in my filesystem under /usr/lib/thunderbird/extensions/{972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}"

"While creating services from category 'profile-after-change', could not create service for entry 'Disk Space Watcher Service', contract ID '@mozilla.org/toolkit/disk-space-watcher;1'"

This is reported as https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=883621 and has been resolved at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=895964 but my system still throws the error. (I have plenty of disk space. Permissions perhaps?)

[JavaScript Warning: "Calendar https://mail.zimbrahostedemail.com/home/matthewe@<zimbra_client>.com/Calendar has a dangling E-Mail identity configured."]

I'm not sure what that means.

Was able to come up with a workaround: Server Settings -> Advanced, de-select "Show only subscribed folders" downloads everything. Good enough. I would issue this as a bug against Thunderbird 24.5.0 As this does not happen with those running 24.4.0

Is your question about files not being created, or because you cannot send and receive mail, or both?

more options

The question is about folders not being created / recongized. I can send and receive mail, "I can send and recieve messages from my INBOX. " My mail folder on zimbra has additional folders, which are recongized and written to as .msf files but the folders containing the contents are not created.

Thanks, I should have mentioned that but, all of the synchronization settings are set. I can recieve and send mail. When I initially set up my account, all the folders were present, but now they're missing.

right click the account name in the folder pane, select subscribe. Are your folders lists as available? are they subscribed?

more options

The folder lists are available, and can be checked. When I click "Subscribe" nothing happens:

"When I select "Manage folder Subscriptions" In the account options, I can see the folders. When I select them, and click the "Subscribe" button, nothing happens. Inspecting my IMAP directory, I see the following structure:"

At the beginning of this thread, I display the contents of my IMAP directory, but the linebreaks didn't preserve, so it looks messy. Basically, the folders I want to subscribe to are listed as .msf files. My Inbox has both an .msf and a mailspool file.

One thing to note however. When I do click "Subscribe", and then shut down and restart, the folders appear briefly (for about a half second) and then disappear.

I suggest you log your imap activity and see what is going on see https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging

Thank you! Was just trying to find logs for Thunderbird.

Got the logs to write. It's logging connection(?) attempts to the additional folders on the server but then it shows a failure:

d7dbe800:mail.mymailserver.com:A:CreateNewLineFromSocket: 9 NO LIST failed

The complete log file follows (its not that big):

Close Thunderbird and delete the panacea.dat file and the folderTree, json files from your profile. then restart.

Thanks Matt, Almost there. When I restart, the icons are visible, but then once I'm connected to the Zimbra host, they disappear. Will research a little more on this end.

Additionally, when I start thunderbird from the command line, I get the following error:

(process:3728): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion 'sys_page_size == 0' failed

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=672671

The posted bug on Bugzilla seems to be more of a heated debate over the status of the bug rather than a formal bug report. Not sure if this is affecting anything, the reported behaviors (firefox crashes) don't apply here.

But joopbraak definitely needs to chill out. lol. i haven't seen that kind of attitude on an open source support forum in a while. Very entertaining.

Hmm, the folders appear on startup, as if thunderbird expects them to be fetched. Without explicitly failing, the folders disappear. The logs seem to follow this process (see above) and then issue the following lines when the folders disappear:

-2036340992[7f197ab4f250]: 95d77000:mail.mailserver.com:A:CreateNewLineFromSocket: 9 NO LIST failed -2036340992[7f197ab4f250]: 95d77000:mail.mailserver.com:A:SendData: 10 list (subscribed) "" "/home/*" -2036340992[7f197ab4f250]: ReadNextLine [stream=7b56c510 nb=56 needmore=0] -2036340992[7f197ab4f250]: 95d77000:mail.mailserver.com:A:CreateNewLineFromSocket: 10 NO LIST failed: wildcards not permitted in username

The "wildcards not permitted in username" is an error message sent by the zimbar mailserver. The logging rightly supresses these credentials but, where Is the username configured to include a wildcard? Is this a false read by zimbra?

After deleting my profile and starting again, checking the settings manually, The problem still continues. I'm thinking this may very well be a zimbra issue.

Verified that this is a Thunderbird issue - just not sure what. This is the same behavior as bug: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=537298 Also, another behavior to note: When I subscribe to folders on my mail account, nothing happens. If I shutdown Thunderbird and restart, The folders appear and then quickly disappear. I have already mentioned this in the thread but, the Activity Manager shows the folders as having been deleted (see image)

Could you post a bug in Bugzilla for the issue? You have a better grip on it than I do. When you file, mark is a a regression in the "whiteboard"
