When you are viewing a website in Firefox you can search for words and phrases on the page. Firefox will show you where the search phrase you've typed appears next on the page, and lets you highlight all the places where it appears.

Using the Find bar

To search for text on a page:

  1. Click the menu button Fx89menuButton then click Find in This page…, or use the keyboard shortcut by pressing Ctrlcommand+F. A find bar will appear at the bottom of the window.

  2. Type a search into the find field. Firefox will automatically highlight the first matching result on the page as you type.
    • If the Highlight All option is selected, all other matching results will also be highlighted in a different color.
    • The current highlighted instance number and the total match count are shown in the find bar. If no match was found, it shows Phrase not found.
  3. Click Next and Previous arrows to jump to each match on the page.
  4. Click X or press Esc to close the find bar.

You can enable or disable any of the following options to change the search results:

  • Highlight All: Highlight all terms that match the search you've entered. Click again to turn it off.
  • Match case: Make searches case-sensitive. Normally if you search for "search phrase", instances of "Search Phrase" on the page will also be found when you use the find bar. If this option is selected, only instances of the phrase as you've typed it will be found.
  • Match Diacritics: When this option is selected the search will distinguish between accented letters and their base letters. For example, the search for "résumé" will not find a match for "resume".
  • Whole Words: This highlights only entire words that match your search.

Quick Find

The Quick Find bar is useful for quick searches and is meant to disappear after a few moments.

Press the / key (forward slash character) while not into a text field to open the Quick Find bar. Then type what you would like to search for.

The Quick Find bar does not have all the find bar controls and options, just the find field and the close button, but the search follows the options selected on the full find bar. Selected options will be indicated next to the find field.

To close the Quick Find bar, wait a few moments for it to disappear, or press the Esc key on the keyboard to close it immediately. You can also click somewhere in Firefox that is not part of the Quick Find bar to close it.

If you want to find only phrases that occur in links on the page you're viewing:

  1. Type ' (single quote character) while not into a text field to bring up the Quick Find (links only) bar.
  2. Type a search phrase into the Quick Find (links only) field. The first link that contains the phrase you've typed will be selected.

Find automatically while typing on a page

Firefox can start searching for phrases you enter without having to open a find bar first. To enable this feature:

  2. Select the General panel.
  3. Navigate to the Browsing section.
  4. Check mark Search for text when you start typing.
