Thunderbird and Hotmail

Thunderbird Thunderbird Last updated: 43% of users voted this helpful

Thunderbird can be used as a client for all of Microsoft's email services (Hotmail, Outlook.com and Windows Live Mail, henceforth referred to as "Hotmail"). Thunderbird will download messages from the Hotmail server and store them on your local system. Similarly, Thunderbird can be used to compose messages which are sent through Hotmail's mail servers. You can still use Hotmail's web-based application - Thunderbird will query the server and synchronize messages.

Configuring servers

Hotmail accounts can be configured in Thunderbird's Automatic Account Configuration. This article provides instructions on how to manually configure an account or modify an existing account.

To manually configure or modify Hotmail account settings:

  1. At the top of the Thunderbird window, click on the On the menu bar, click on the Thunderbird menu, choose EditTools menu and select Account Settings…. The Account Settings dialog window will be displayed.
  2. Select your Hotmail account from the list on the left. Make sure your name and account are correctly specified in the Default Identity section.
