Hi

I am using version 115.14.0 (64-bit) and I am using Fedora 39, up to date OS. I have been using ThunderBird for a very long time. I have been experiencing an issue which, unfortunately, seems to come and go. I am experiencing this issue on 2 separate physical computers. How can I restore the list of emails under any account when they are not visible?
 This is very troubling ...

This just happened with a new update on only one of my two gmail accounts 128.2.3esr

I was not getting email on one account, so I deleted that one account. Now I can't add it back to TB. I get "Unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password." Double check password and logged on with it on Edge browser, no problem.

I uninstalled / reinstalled Thunderbird with the same result.

Thank you!

Think this is a bug report rather than a question.... anyway....

In case you don't know....

mbox files store emails with "From " on a new line recognised as the beginning of a new email (and thus the end of the last).

There are various formats, but a typical first line will be something like From - Fri, 20 Oct 2000 11:34:32 (sometimes the sender name is included here, sometimes the date format differs, probably due to history of client used, sometimes there's no dash; the actual information is still available in various other headers)

The problem is.....

When moving emails from one folder within Local Folders (I haven't tested imap folders, but that's not what I need), the information is stripped, leaving only "From " (followed by new line). The remainder of the email is fine, and moving folders whole retains all information.

I've tried drag and drop, and I've tried "Copy..." dialogues. I've tried message filters. I've also tried a couple of extensions (I presume they just use the built-in file moving code). All exhibit this behaviour.

(for info, I'm trying to rebuild my archive in a logical way from zillions of backups, and for whatever reason this behaviour spoils the ability to remove duplicates via the "Remove Duplicate Messages" add-on, which does cope otherwise - I'm trying to merge multiple folders from maybe 25 years(!). I haven't even started on my Outlook .pst archives!)

(Bonus - another one, which may be intentional - when moving emails from one folder to another, the source mbox file keeps all the moved emails, and only its .msf index is updated. Go to "Properties... Repair Folder"; the .msf is recalculated and all your moved emails reappear magically.)

Basically things work under the hood, but it's all a bit flaky.... ;-)

Anyway, thanks, and do as you will with all of this!  :-)

Message filters not working after transfer to new windows device. (Apologies for long report below). Problem is similar to that reported and still unsolved here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1391209

All old messages automatically accessed under IMAP protocol sit within correct email folder on new device.

Message filters rules successfully located on old device, copied and placed in corresponding windows folder on new device. Email folder structure looks identical on both devices.

New messages sit in inbox on new device, without being filtered. Instead error messages appear, repeatedly.

"The folder 'xxxx' could not be found, so filter(s) associated with this folder will be disabled. Verify that the folder exists, and that filters point to a valid destination folder.

The folder 'yyyy' could not be found, so filter(s) associated with this folder will be disabled. Verify that the folder exists, and that filters point to a valid destination folder.

If same new messages are accessed on old device, they later appear in correct folder on new device, and no longer sit in inbox

How to make email folder structure on new device visible to filter rules there ? This is necessary for filtered email to work successfully on new device, without requiring old device to be operational - it will be taken out of service in near future.

I'm used to tagging important messages by right clicking on the message and with my left hand clicking G and 1. Quick and easy.

As of the latest update, that no longer works. After typing the G, I need to remove my right hand from the mouse to press the [Enter] key before I can complete the process by typing 1. It’s not a super' 'big deal, but it does slow me down — and I get annoyed because I haven’t unlearned the old pattern yet and forget to hit the [Enter] key almost every time I try to tag an email.

Can this change be rolled back?

since 8/22/24 I have been unable to send email from one of my personal domains. Same install of T-Bird successfully sends SMTP via Gmail and my other domains.

I receive the error shown in the first photo below. Sending of the message failed. An error occurred while sending mail. Outgoing server (SMTP) error. The server responded: us2.outbound.mailhostbox.com ESMTP not accepting connections.

I have been back and forth with the domain tech support. Here are the email content (parsed for easy reading)

Me > I am having difficulty sending email. > I can POP email without issue. > I am using the most recent version of Thunderbird; version 128.2.0esr (64-bit) > When I send (with or without an attachment) I get the following error: error as shown above > I have never seen this error before and cannot find it in your knowledgebase files. > My SMTP settings: > > server name: smtp.drachenfelspress.com > Port: 587 > Connection security: None > Authentication method: Password; transmitted insecurely > User Name: mcaputo@drachenfelspress.com

Tech: If you are able to download emails from our server but unable to send out emails through the same, then it is likely that your Internet service provider is blocking port 25 on your local network. For such ISPs, you must use their SMTP server to send out mails on their network. Customer Support - TH

WELL Since I was using 587 that didn't help at all.

ME the error says YOUR server, "US2.outbound.mailhostbox.com ESMTP not accepting connections." This is YOUR error, not my ISP. I was using port 587, my ISP does not block port 25.

Tech try non-SSL using the following: STARTTLS Auth Normal change server name to smtp.<yourdomain>.com

Me No change

Tech Try reducing TLS version back to 1.0

Me No difference. Restored TLS 1.3

Tech return to the mailhostbox.com server Port 587 STARTTLS Normal full username

ME ok, no difference. That is where we started, didn't work then, doesn't work now. (second photo)

Tech Try port 25

ME Same results

Tech <resets my password>

Me Did you reset my password overnight?

Tech To investigate the issue, we needed to reset the password for mcaputo@drachenfelspress.com, to enable us to configure the Thunderbird email client on our end. The temporary password is "Se!!P)iqk2" We have successfully created a Thunderbird account and were able to send emails through it without any complications. The configurations we utilized are displayed in the screenshot provided below: us2.outbound.mailhostbox.com Port 587 STARTTLS Normal full username

Then change your password.

Me I appreciate your response. HOWEVER the issue remains.

Tech We have already replied to you on this matter.

ME Tried sending on port 465 and it indicated "sending" but hung there. Using Telnet I am able to access the us2.smtp.mailhostbox.com on port 587 but I cannot trigger an AUTH login through TELNET. (see CMD screenshot below)

Tech What is your IP address?

ME It is not static, but today's is (IP address at the time given)

Tech We have done further testing by setting the ThunderBird email client for mcaputo@drachenfelspress.com to both SSL and Non SSL connections. We can see both the implementations being fetched correctly without any issues. <provides two sets of POP and IMAP settings>

ME I can POP successfully, have always been able to. Problem is with SMTP, outbound mail.

Tech Provides two incomplete setting combinations: us2.smtp.mailboxhost.com port 587 smtp.drachenfelspress.com port 25 Upon using any of the two implementations, SSL or Non SSL as configured above, there should be no issues in setting up the email client.

The SMTP and IMAP passwords (if asked any) will be the same as your current email account password.

We are unable to replicate the issue you mentioned. Customer Support - TH

ME I am unable to replicate your success. I still cannot SEND email.

Tech We have rechecked and can confirm that we are able to setup the email client on the latest version of thunderbird i.e 128.2.1 as well using the same IMAP settings as shared in previous email. We are afraid that we are unable to replicate the issue you are reporting after numerous tests from our end. As a suggestion, could you try to connect to your mail account from a different network or ISP? Customer Support - TH

ME Again, IMAP is not used on this account the issue is with OUTGOING mail. Tried both SSL and non-SSL settings for drachenfelspress.com outgoing mail will not send.

That's ALL I have right now. I am going out right now to try to send email from a laptop with a fresh t-bird install while sitting in a McDonalds on their wifi...

Ok, I have read several posts, and contacted support at mail.com. I have tried the fixes I have found. mail.com says I have it all set right. They have tested my account from another computer. They said they DO support Thunderbird.

I shut off my firewall. I shut off my anti-virus. We tried SSL, we tried STARTTLS. Just won't send. Said to check password, we did that. I sent mail.com screenshots of all my settings. They say it is all right. I can get mail from them but can't send. I needed POP3 to make sure I could save all the important emails to my computer AND offsite backup.

I'm baffled. They are baffled.

Prior to being pushed the Thunderbird update to Version 128.2.3esr this morning, I had always received a popup window to confirm message deletion. After the update this morning, I am not getting the confirmation window and I have not been able to find a setting that might have been turned off with the update.

The closest setting I can find is extensions.webextensions.ExtensionStorageIDB.migrated.confirmbeforedelete@caligraf which is set to TRUE.

Has this functionality been removed from Thunderbird? I sure hope not.

Comment from one of our users: "thunderbird is really not working right for me... it's a mess on the 'sent' folder, with either no content shown or the wrong email appearing to the wrong people...", please see image (1).png, and "on this e-mail, an image appears that I never ever have seen in my life. Can I use something else, that is not webmail? XXX mentioned she uses outlook and doesn't have issues at all", see image (2).png.

I've tried the compact folders "fix". This fix appears to only work on Windows.

The user is on a Mac and out in the field. They are non technical. I'm seeing them tomorrow but don't really know what I can do for their dilema, apart from setup Outlook as they request.

This has been a long standing issue, I raised it two years ago. Sorry I can't really add anything useful. If you can get back to me with what error data can be collected I'm happy to upload it.
