Did a Mozilla Refresh yesterday. Afterwards all bookmarks and top browser Tool bar were gone. With community help I Got those back with the exception of at least one category/Title of bookmark. Search on that Title did not reveal it, but searching for the bookmarks which were under that title were shown on the search results. However it was not obvious how to create the title again and put the bookmarks back under that title. The Organize Bookmarks feature is missing. Also the feature for Create new bookmarks is gone.

The Organize menu is context sensitive. If you click Bookmarks Menu in the left pane, or double-click it in the right pane, then Firefox should list the current folders and bookmarks on the menu -- and most of the grayed out items on the Organize menu should come back to life.

I think you are saying the menu bar is okay --

File - Edit - View - History - Bookmarks - Tools - Help

-- but you are missing one of your bookmark folders.

The old description "Organize Bookmarks" has changed to "Show All Bookmarks" or the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+b is the same.

Regarding adding a bookmark, a user experience person decided that if you are using a mouse, the "Bookmark this Page" entry on the Bookmarks menu is redundant because you can more quickly do one of these:

  • right-click the page > click the star icon
  • double-click the star icon on the main toolbar (a single click auto-adds the page to Unsorted Bookmarks instead of displaying the dialog)

But of course, old habits die hard...

I'm not aware of any way to force it to show up when clicking it with the mouse. If you activate the Bookmarks menu with the keyboard (Alt+b) then it's there. Personally I recommend using Ctrl+d if you can remember it.

Yes I do see Organize now under 'Show All Bookmarks'.

Trouble is when I click on 'Organize', most of the items on the pull-down list are greyed out and inactive - including 'New Bookmark' and 'New Folder'. Would really like to use those.

Now... about that lost folder. Firefox's search feature in this dialog doesn't help you locate a lost bookmark or folder. There are two tricks for this:

(1) Show Parent Folder add-on -- adds a column showing the current folder name of a bookmark. You can change a setting to make it show the parent of the parent, etc., so you can find it in the hierarchy.

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/show-parent-folder/

To edit its settings, use its Options button on the Add-ons page. This would be in a normal tab, not in the Library dialog. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then on the right look for Show Parent Folder.

(2) Edit Bookmark - if you load the bookmarked page, the star outline on the toolbar should turn blue. Click that to call up Edit Bookmark. Next to "Folder:" will be a bar with the name of the current folder. But it doesn't tell you where that folder currently is.

Thanks. Clicking on Bookmarks Menu then on 'Organize' allows the items of the pull-down list to be active (including 'New Folder'). I created the lost folder title again - which of course gives me an empty folder.

The method I used to get back my bookmarks from the lost folder into the newly created folder was to search Bookmarks for some of the names I remembered in the bookmarks, get a list of bookmarks containing that name, select the whole list (using click on first item then going to the bottom and shift-click), then drag the list into my newly created folder title.

This is doable although a bit tedious. I will explore more of your methods also. Thanks again!
