Try moving pointer in Thunderbird after opening then it freezes and computer will not respond. Have to do a manual reboot. It will work in Thunderbird safe mode. Issues with the update? Can update be re-installed?

This indicates either an addon is causing the problem, or hardware acceleration. Which addons do you have installed, and can you narrow down whether just one of them causes the freeze?

I reinstalled 38.1.0 but it still freezes in normal mode. If I start in safe mode with all addons it will function. It also functions in safe mode with all addons removed.

No change. Now to look at my folders I have to right click and open them in a new tab(?) Since the reinstall it at least is not locking up the computer

What antivirus software do you run?

more options

McAfee. Also tried register cleaner. I can work in Safe Mode. If I start from the Desktop icon it will freeze the computer still. Also of interest, Windows Update will not work. I tried Microsoft repair solution but did not fix it. I scanned again with Malwarebytes but found nothing

I have tried the anti virus suggestions. Had to fix MS Update also via admin CMF sfc scannow which fixed Update but did not fix Thunderbird. I load from the icon on the desktop and I can only open (1) email then nothing more but it does not freeze Win7. I can open from safe mode and run. I have reinstalled update 38.1.0 again with same results. Wasted a whole day investigating fixes. Ideas?

I have made all changes related to McAfee. This issue started when the update for 38.1.0 was installed. I did not have problems prior to this point

It's hard to believe, I know. But it doesn't matter that the problem did not exist prior to version 38. The problem is with McAfee.
