Thunderbird very slow to open or delete messages. Have compacted folders, emptied Junk and trash folders, no improvement. Just upgraded (about 3 hours ago) to 38.4.0

If you have not changed anything except updating thunderbird then it's likely caused by antivirus software. see https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues and https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Memory_Usage_Problems

Problem turned out to be interference from BitDefender. A little more searching found a possible help: "Uninstall and re-install BitDefender". Did that, and problem solved.
