Can't access TB at all from desktop. (XP)
I can't get to the TB window to use email. When I double click the TB icon n the desktop I see the hour glass symbol flash for a second and then nothing happens. I checked with my email sever, Time Warner Cable Road Runner, and could connect to my email by using going directly through their web page. Yet not through TB. Have had this problem for about a day and a half. Tried a cold start of computer with same results. Can get through to other email ISPs such as Yahoo OK. Thanks for any assistance. My email is ikern@hvc.rr.com.

Please answer all questions: 1. in XP, right click on "Computer" in the start menu or desktop, and pick Properties. What version is shown - SP2 or SP3? 2. Did Thunderbird update on your system in the last 2-3 days? 3. Are things better after installing 38.5.1 test version from https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/candidates/38.5.1-candidates/build2/win32/en-US/Thunderbird%20Setup%2038.5.1.exe

Using SP3, last TB update was this past July. I need to find out about automatic updates. AND:
SOLVED THE PROBLEM WITH 38.5.1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Many thanks. Great way to start off 2016!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Automatic updates are set at tools | options | advanced | updates
This is interesting. I already had the automatic updates selected under Advanced. When I looked at the update history there were no updates shown, and this after I updated to 38.5.1. Any suggestions? I seems, for something I must be doing wrong, automatic updates aren't being installed. This would explain why the last update I could find was last July. ???????????

I do not understand why you think (or how you know) the last update was in July.
