When viewing Netflix I get a Firefox update request. Is it officially from Firefox? I've allowed it once and then wondered if I did something dangerous.

I'm fairly new to Firefox and when viewing shows on Netflix I often get an update request....saying I should do this update. I did it once and then someone told me I was inviting malware or viruses when doing this. Are these pop-up requests to update Firefox legitimate? Are they officially from Firefox? Same with Silverlight. Is it legit? Thanks!

Firefox 44 was released this week. However, Firefox usually updates automatically in the background, so if you get a prompt, that often is a solicitation to download some malware.

If it doubt, cancel the prompt and then use the "About Firefox" dialog to check whether an update is available. Please see this article for more information: Update Firefox to the latest release.
