how to open links in a new window

more options

Before I updated Firefox to 45.0.1, I could right click on a link and select Open in New Window, since that was my preferred choice rather than opening in a tab. Now, right clicking doesn't seem to do anything. I do not get any pop-up menu to provide me with any options whatsoever. Has this option been disabled or moved?

That should still be working.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

The link context menu should still work. Do you get context menus anywhere, for example:

  • in a page - blank area, image?
  • on a toolbar or the tab bar?

In case the problem is caused by one of your extensions not being fully compatible with Firefox 45, could you try updating them? For those hosted on the Mozilla Add-ons site, you can do that from the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Command+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then above the list on the right click the button with the gear/cog/wheel on it, and "Check for Updates" from the drop-down menu.

Thank you both for your replies. It seems like the issue which I'm experiencing is working at times and not working at other times.

On update 49.0.1 there is not even a question "Do you want to open a link into a "New Window"? I want that spec back.

Hi mbumble, are you still using Windows?

What options are you given on the right-click context menu in Firefox 49 when you right-click on a link? If you have new Tab followed by new Private Window, that could be caused by the page you are viewing being in a private window.

Win 7. Actually, that wasn't the point. Tools/Option/ Tabs. No longer offered "Open new Window". I don't don't want to open a new tab. I want to open a Window.

Hi mbumble, since you posted in someone else's question, I assumed it was related. So you're saying you have a different problem.

The Options page, General panel, has a checkbox under Tabs which says:

[X] "Open new windows in a new tab instead"

When Firefox encounters a page that has coded a link to open in a new window, if you have that box checked, it is diverted to a new tab instead. If you don't want it diverted, uncheck the box.

If your Options page is "broken" please start a new question using the Ask a Question link at the top of this page.

That was the entire point! There is no option, anymore, Open in New Window! That option is not offered. I want it opened in a New Window.

Hi mbumble, if the checkbox doesn't work for you, or you do not have that option, please start a new question and include a screenshot of the problem area. This article has suggestions for capturing screenshots: How do I create a screenshot of my problem?. Please cut out or blur any sensitive information in the image before attaching it to your question or to a reply to your question if it won't upload with your question.
