For anyone that finds this and needs the solution this is as close as we can get. Still a few steps to do but it works. You get yahoo back and can set it as default.
JSCHER and COR-EL thank you again if you see this
Does that mean that if you turn off the "geo-specific" feature, you will get the full list again, the next time you regenerate search.json.mozlz4?
(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste geos and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the browser.search.geoSpecificDefaults preference to switch the value from true to false
Then the steps to have Firefox generate a new search.json.mozlz4 file are here: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1208139?page=1#answer-1085333
Note from moderator: The above solution will no longer work if the yahoo.xml file is removed from Firefox. You'll have to install the Yahoo opensearch engine, either from the yahoo.com home page via the Search bar or from another source such as https://www.userchrome.org/yahooxml.html (as mentioned here in bug 1443957). aw

Hi needyahoo, thank you for trying the process of removing the search.json.mozlz4 file.
Could you paste this address to your Firefox address bar and press Enter to load it? This is an internal address of the XML definition of the Yahoo search plugin:
resource://search-plugins/yahoo.xml
Does that give you content or "page not found"?
hi, you can install the yahoo search provider from https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/yahoo-search-addon/ if you're inclined to do so.

this is what i got from that This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.

I'm also going to add a link to this page I set up to more easily install Yahoo search plugins:
https://www.userchrome.org/yahooxml.html
(I tried to submit one to the Add-ons site but it was way more complicated then I expected, so I probably won't get that done until the weekend.)
