How can I restore the previous session when firefox reopens with the home page, and clicking on "restore previous session" only gives me the home page again?
I had a lot of tabs open, but x-ed out firefox before shutting down the computer for 8-10 hours. When I reopened firefox, it showed the home page, so I went to the menu in the upper right corner, and clicked on "restore previous session" and the home page reappeared, and "restore previous session" was then greyed out. (There were 25 tabs, but I had successfully restored a session with that many before.) I didn't even get the message that they are having trouble recovering my tabs I'm not sure I can find all those tabs, even if I spend hours going through my history.

Hi,
When you opened Firefox, and it showed you home page, that would be your 'previous session'.
You need to change the startup settings - see :
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-restore-my-tabs-last-time
'Hope that will work for you !
You can check for closed tabs and windows:
- History -> Recently Closed Tabs/Windows
In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" or otherwise clear history.
- do not clear the Browsing History
- Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history": [X] "Clear history when Firefox closes" -> Settings
- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/delete-browsing-search-download-history-firefox
- clearing "Site Preferences" clears exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, and software installation and exception for password and other website specific data
- clearing "Cookies" will remove all selected cookies including cookies with an "Allow" exception you may want to keep
Use one of these to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar.
- "3-bar" menu button -> Exit (Power button)
- Windows: File -> Exit
- Mac: Firefox -> Quit Firefox
- Linux: File -> Quit
