Why do most Thunderbird updates disable Lightning?
In most cases of Thunderbird update, done automatically in the background, my Lightning is disabled. Often there seems to be a new update of Thunderbird waiting, which restores Lightning, but I have to go to release channel to get the update. At other times, there is no update waiting, and have to wait and check manually every time I start Thunderbird, until one appears, while I have no access to may calendar data. In some instances I had to remove and re-install Lightning, but that did not seem work unless a Thunderbird update was available or occurred in the meantime. Is there any way to identify the incompatibility before updating and hold off until a compatible version is available? I would prefer to have uninterrupted access to my calendar.

In all probability simply removing Lightning and restarting Thunderbird will see the correct version installed.
We are aware some folk have issues, it appears that there is some sort of conflict between the bundled version of Lightning and the installed one. Silly as it sounds, removing lightning and restarting causes the "bundled" version to appear.

As it is currently working properly, I shall wait for the next instance of failure and apply your suggested solution. Thank you.
Restore Thunderbird 52.9.1 Lightning Calendar connection I have reinstalled Lightning into Thunderbird and the connection works, but I have lost all data.
I have uninstalled/restarted the Lightning about 3x and still no calendar. Was ok last night.
Hi - I lost Lightning from the update to Thunderbird 60.2.1 yesterday. I have tried removing it as an add on, and restarting, but I do not 'see' any way to launch the calendar (lightning) view. Any advice on how to get it back would be greatly appreciated.
[troubleshooting article] is mentioned in https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/60.2.1/releasenotes/
If that doesn't work and you are on Linux see https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1484532#c11
Does that help?
Thank you, I did manage to fix it, I think. The troubleshooting article did not help - I removed the Lightning add on. The first suggestion in the second link (config) perhaps as I am on Linux and it did not recognise the code. The suggestion (I think 3) to install calendar from the distro (Linux Mint) package manager worked - there was both a calendar installation, and a transititional package for calendar to enable (I think Thunderbird) upgrades. I am localised to en-gb, which I think is the issue. I did get an error code on rebooting (restarting Thunderbird was not enough) and restarting thunderbird but I have my calendar back. The error (I think connected to the calendar add-on removed?) reported was: An error was encountered preparing the calendar located at moz-abdirectory:// for use. It will not be available. [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80570015 (NS_ERROR_XPC_CI_RETURNED_FAILURE) [nsIJSCID.createInstance]" nsresult: "0x80570015 (NS_ERROR_XPC_CI_RETURNED_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: jar:file:///usr/lib/thunderbird/extensions/%7Be2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103%7D.xpi!/components/calItemModule.js -> resource://calendar/calendar-js/calCalendarManager.js :: createCalendar :: line 445" data: no]
The error code relates to Thunderbirthday, which I use to remind me of upcoming anniversaries, and I did miss a niece's birthday yesterday. Sadly it does not seem supported by the current version of Thunderbird 60.2.1 presently - has this been incorporated into Thunderbird like Lightning, or should I look for it being updated as an add-on. Or, is it now redundant, and Thunderbird can do that function itself now? Thanks for your advice.
