Google has informed me the following: Your account is vulnerable to malicious activity because you’re allowing apps & devices that use less secure sign-in technology to access your account. You should turn off this type of access. Under "apps with access to your data", it is listed that 'Mozilla Thunderbird Email has access to Gmail'. Thus my question "Is accessing my email account via thinderbird is less secure? How can I overcome it?"

This is mostly Google hype. You can switch your account settings for authentication from normal password to oauth2 and not turn on less secure apps. Oauth2 only works for IMAP and SMTP. If you use POP then less secure apps is your only option.
