Hi, the options for selecting and deselecting content on the built-in home page (which is also the new tab page) can be found on the Options page in the Home panel.

• Windows: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
• Mac: "3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences
• Linux: "3-bar" menu button (or Edit menu) > Preferences
• Any system: type or paste about:preferences into the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it

In the left column, click Home

Then on the right side, you can select/deselect different categories and see what you like best.

Jscher2000, I had been on the home page and at first I didn't see anything that resembled what was causing the info bar but your telling me the solution was on the home tab helped me discover the problem. It was the box labeled: "Snippets". I had no idea what "snippets" were but I unchecked that box and it was gone. Thank you!

OK Firefox you're about to get a really bad review from me! That damn info bar at the bottom of the home page came back! It went away when I unchecked the snippets box but, after I closed the page and reopened it about a half hour later, it is back! What now?

Did you verify that snippets is still disabled?

Snippets usually have a close X button that appears if you hover the text.

Is this message text in the snippets-container if you check this in the Inspector?

Dude you've lost me with this inspect element stuff. Yes the snippet box is still unchecked and yes I can "X" out the info bar at the bottom BUT I shouldn't have to do this EVERY TIME I open the browser. Besides all of that, the bar is completely blocking the bottom row of my bookmarked sites!

If Snippets doesn't have a checkmark then this section shouldn't show.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is is causing the problem.

• switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
• do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

First, if a built-in page doesn't respond to a settings change, try using a "hard" reload which bypasses the cached version of the page. For example, press Ctrl+Shift+r instead of Ctrl+r.

Next, there is a second setting you could try. I don't know why it exists, but if the main setting isn't working for you, maybe this is the situation where it's needed?

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste snip and pause while the list is filtered

(3) The checkbox flips the browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.feeds.snippets preference to false, you could verify that is still set

(4) Double-click the browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.disableSnippets preference to switch the value from false to true and test whether this makes a difference

jscher2000, as you can see from my screen name, I'm not too computer smart but I am very electronically intelligent. I did the 4 steps you suggested and the double click in item 4 seems to have eliminated the banner at the bottom. I also did a restart just to test it but I'll give it until tomorrow to see if it lasts. Thank you again for your time. Hopefully this is it. I just wonder why FF has to do these things? Are they not aware that no one likes pop up ads especially ones that block content.

Thanks for trying cor-el and I agree with you. If snippets isn't checked the banner shouldn't show up but it did and you might want to get FF to look into why it did.

The built-in Firefox home page featured snippets below the search box as early as Firefox 4, so this isn't exactly a new feature in Firefox Quantum. However, now that snippets are on the new tab page, more people see them. Could be useful if you're interested in learning about other browser features, Mozilla services, and Mozilla campaigns (e.g., Net Neutrality).

I've tried Firefox with add-ons disabled.

I've tried disabling Snippets through the UI as well as through about:config.

Regardless of my settings, Snippets appear on new tabs.

However, I will mention something I saw in a different user's thread: If you have a colorful fox icon in the upper left corner of the new tab page, with a blue dot, that indicates you never clicked through the introductory "tour" for this page. The snippets will keep appearing until you click through the tour -- don't worry, it's very brief.
