Thunderbird takes a long time to send messages

I have been using Thunderbird for years on my Window 10 tablet and generally really like it.

However, I often notice that when I send an email it seems to take longer than usual to send it. It can go into 'spin' mode, for 15, 30 or more seconds before the email gets sent.

I'm not sure why this is. Most of the messages are not long or complicated or have formatting or attachments.

So, why is Thunderbird spending so much time 'thinking about' sending my emails before it actually does send them?

It's probably not TB that's causing the delay, but a security/antivirus program scanning outgoing mail. What is the AV program, and is the TB profile folder excluded from scanning?
