I just emptied my trash folder in Thunderbird. It now shows zero messages; GMail shows 70,000 messages. I.e. It does not see the folder as empty!

Why the discrepancy? Is there a rock-solid reliable way of emptying the Trash folder when it contains so many emails? GMail just hangs.

Thanks!

Here are Google's recommendations for deleted messages:

Server settings tab

Check "Check for new messages at startup."
Check "Check for new messages every 10 minutes."
Next to "When I delete a message," select Just mark it as deleted.
Uncheck "Clean up ('Expunge') Inbox on Exit."
   Uncheck "Empty Trash on Exit."

They also say "Don't change your IMAP settings to save deleted messages in the Trash. When you do this, any messages you delete from your email client will get permanently deleted from Gmail in 30 days."
