That's not the default action in Firefox when opening a new tab, something you installed has changed that action. Time for a little troubleshooting.

Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode?

Don't select anything right now, just use "Continue in SafeMode."

If not, see this:

A new tab opens by default as a blank page, unless you click the Home button to open a new home page.

You can press the ESC key to stop loading a page if you do not want to use the default page that opens, but type a new URL in the location bar.

You can also create a bookmark on the Bookmarks Toolbar with the location set to about:blank and middle click or Ctrl left click that bookmark to open a blank page.
