when I try to search Microsoft Help and click on a link, I get redirected to a page which tells me that my browser cannot accept stuff and I need to turn on Java. But under firefox - tools - options - content the box for Enable Java has a tick in it

That isn't for Java, that preference is for JavaScript.

Type about:plugins in the address bar and hit Enter.
Does Java appear in that window?

You can also look in Tools > Addons > Plugins and see if Java is listed there AND see if it is enabled.
