When I try to print, even though I have "Print Background and Colors" selected, it will priont text only. The print preview also displays text only.
I am trying to print web pages, but only the text prints with no colors, images or backgrounds, even though "Print Background (colors and images) is selected. The Print Preview does not show the background colors or images either, just the plain text, the same as the printer prints.

All web pages or just some pages?
Can you provide the URL for a web page where you have that problem?
All the pages that I've tried, including this one, https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/817949 and on two computers, one a desktop running Windows 7 64 professional, and the other Windows 7 64 Home Premium.
That's normal for this forum's web pages, there is no print.css file used to specifically format the page for printing, and the stylesheets that are used specifically exclude "print" as a media type - link rel="stylesheet" media="screen, projection,tv" - so no "style" is used for printing.
I not saying that you don't possibly have a problem with Firefox 4 and printing, just that any page in this forum doesn't make for a good example of that problem - this forum just isn't intended to be printed to paper.
Its strange that I can print the page in full from IE8 and not Firefox. This is not the first time this has happened and this time this is the page in question.
I am having the same problem with multiple web sites and even some pdfs generated from a website. Some text parts of the web page are visible in the print preview and when printed, but other parts are missing, even though they display correctly on teh screen
It is not an issue with this forum - it is a web wide issue.
There must be some setting that is filtering images. the question is, what is it?
There seems to be a number of pages that this happens to.
I wanted to print this page http://www.brightonphoenix.org.uk/stories/123 [because my son is on it] however, just could not print it legibly.
So I went to File and Save Page As... and saved it to my desktop used CoffeeCup HTML editor and edited the following style sheet links:
<link href="123_files/screen.css" media="screen" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css"> <link href="123_files/application.css" media="screen" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">
Removing media="screen" in both - I was then able to print perfectly!!!
There is clearly an issue with the css command and web browsers, as the problem was also present in IE & Safari and solved once edited.
I'm no professional web designer but this is something web designers need to address because I'm sure they [and their Clients] would like their pages to print properly!

I have the opposite problem. I have custom system colors (because of vision problems, I can't take the default bright white background), and ask Firefox to use them. Since I switched to Firefox 5 yesterday, by custom background color gets picked up by Print Preview and actually gets printed (even though I have "Print background" NOT checked on Page Setup.
So, how do I get Firefox to ignore my system colors when printing? Lordy, I can't afford gallons of ink just to print unwanted backgrounds!
