I updated to firefox 4 and when I closed my older version and then restarted firefox none of the my tabs that saved where restored. So I reopened all my tab to the sites I visited and tried to close again. I got the warning about closing multiple tabs, I unchecked the repeat warning box, and closed firefox. I didn't get the "save your tabs" warning box. So I closed firefox and reopened. none of my tabs were restored. I then went to help and looked up "saving tabs" on the help page. I did everything except for" setting may be set incorrectly" because I don't know where to find that setting! I looked in Options but could not find anything in there that refers to saved tab settings. I then did a clean install of firefox 4. removed all previous setting. did standard install. Still no luck. I don't understand how this works on a older version of firefox and not the new version. I've tried this on 2 of my computers that have FF4 on them and still no luck.

I upgraded to 4 recently and have an odd version of this problem. My computer is set up with multiple accounts. One account does NOT have this problem. The other account does. I deleted FF from the computer. I also deleted the profiles and all the other FF stuff under the account with the problem. I reinstalled FF. The account that had no problem to begin with worked fine, restarting with all of the previous tabs. The account that couldn't start with the tabs before the uninstall still didn't start with tabs after the reinstall. I closed FF and restarted and there was only a blank tab on restart. I know where to go in options to make sure it starts with tabs from last time and set the option to to that, but it doesn't want to work. I have not looked at the newest session.js folder, but since it was brand new, I wasn't expecting a problem there.

Firefox 4 saves the previous session automatically, so there is no longer need for the dialog asking if you want to save the current session.
You can use "Firefox > History > Restore Previous Session" to get the previous session.
There is also a "Restore Previous Session" button on the default about:home Home page.

Another possibility is to use:

Make sure that you do not use Delete browsing, search and download history on Firefox to clear the 'Browsing History' when you close Firefox.

@ cor-el : Thanks for the hint about canceling the "Clear history" option.

  • For those who might have this problem but are not sure, on the Privacy pane in Preferences you need to either
  • choose Firefox will "remember history", OR,
  • choose Firefox will "use custom settings for history", but in this case make sure the "Clear history when Firefox closes" custom option is NOT checked.
