If looking for something specific to my country (e.g. UK) I do not need to know it is available in say Australia - therefore I want to filter by my base country.

However, I may often want to lift this filter.

This is on Google? When you get the results page, click the small Advanced Search link below the query box and look for "Region".

I don't know whether you can make that the default, but it could well be possible.

Not sure what you really want. The tip offered by jscher2000 sounds good enough to me.

You can also try these steps:

Add Google UK to your search engine list: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/google-uk/ and move Google UK up to the top of the list.

You can also go to about:config to default search engine for the Awesome Bar to Google UK
