Firefox 9.0 is still in Beta testing. The current version is 9.0 Beta 6.

If you do use this you will be put on the Beta channel. When 10.0 is moved/merged to the Beta channel as 10.0b1 when 9.0 is moved to release channel you would get a update to 10.0b1 then. If you do not want to be on Beta channel then, you can then install a release build to get back on Release channel.

The "official" release of Firefox 9.0 has not occurred as of 12:00 (noon) PDT. The delay could be caused by one or both of the following issues:

  • "There's a startup crash on mac for Fx9 that was introduced in the latest beta that is really bad."
  • "Separately, there are some concerns that the hang issue that we're seeing in 10 may also be in 9"

As of 8:04 a.m. PST this morning: "The plan is for it to go out later today and for it to be a manual update only for now. So users will have to check for updates themselves or download and install it from the website."

Others may have downloaded from the ftp servers, but it is best/safest to wait for a decision from Mozilla on the above issues. The release could occur at any time.

Ok now Firefox 9.0 is officially out at www.mozilla.com

For Mac users it may be best to stay with 8.0.1 for the moment due to a startup crash issue. There will likely be a respin for the Mac build of Fx 9.0.
