I can select "remember history" or "never remember history" (tools-options-privacy). I can also select "use custom settings for history". However, once hitting the "ok" button, only the first two are saved. Every time I choose the custom, and reopen the options dialogue, I'm back on never remember. I don't understand what's going on as I'm running ver 10.1 on two xp computers and they are fine. It's on my win7 computer (fresh install starting at ver9) that's the issue. I might add all three are also set to "tell sites I don't want to be tracked". Does anyone have any idea as to why firefox doesn't want to save the "use custom" option? As I said, I'd think not too much of it other than I can choose this combination with two other computers. Something is definitely fishy here.

EDIT: Sorry to have wasted anyone's time but I've just fixed the issue though I'm not sure how. I simply started changing settings around, saving and changing again. I chose "remember", I turned off private browsing mode and altered some of the options regarding cookies and such...saved that and when reopening the options dialogue, found them saved. I then chose use custom settings, chose my preferred settings and they saved this time. I don't know how or why but it's all set the way I want. Sigh.

That is OK.

The "Use custom settings for history" setting allows to see the current history and cookie settings, but selecting that setting doesn't make any changes to history and cookie settings.
Firefox shows the "Use custom settings for history" setting as an indication that at least one of the history and cookie settings is not the default to make you aware that changes were made.
If all History settings are default then the custom settings are hidden and you see "Firefox will: (Never) Remember History".
"Never Remember History" means that Private Browsing is active and "Always use private browsing mode" gets a check mark.

That must have been one of the things I tinkered with to end up with "use custom...". I recall allowing cookies for my own website while testing the settings and that change is what then "allowed" me to enable this as opposed to "never/remember history". Thanks for the reply and reminder of how to get this looking as I expected it to. The problem I had is that I recently needed to reformat my win7 computer and after the reinstall, I went straight to FF9 (then 10) and it's been so long since I set all my preferences, I simply forgot how I got them all the way I wanted.
