Have there been recent changes (in release 12) to firefox scrolling?

It seems to me that Firefox scrolling (or positioning of text within the window) has changed in Firefox 12.

Specifically in two cases: (1) If I do a Find via ctrl-G within a web page, the line containing the found text now is always positioned at the middle of the window, and I don't -think- that happened before. Before release 12 I think the text did not move as long as the next item found was on the visible screen.

(2) If I click a button on a web page, it seems that the line containing the button moves to the middle of the window. Again, I don't think this occurred before.

I noticed this just after FF upgraded to 12.0, without having made any other changes to add-ons or preferences that I'm aware of.

If something has changed in FF 12, is there some preference to get it working as it used to?

Hello walt.f,

could you launch Firefox with the Add-Ons disabled and see if the problem still occurs? Can you try reinstalling Firefox? There might have been a problem during the installation.

Sounds like autoscrolling is on: Preferences -> Advanced tab, there's a checkbox.

Yes, that is a deliberate change to the way Find works.

  • bug 171237 - Find in Page: highlighted result should be at the middle of the page (vertically centered) instead of last line/bottom of page
  • bug 720126 - Find in Page: always centering highlighted result makes it hard to see relative positions of multiple results

(please do not comment in bug reports)

Thanks, cor-el. Yes, bug 720126 is what I'm talking about. I find the behavior after bug 171237 was implemented totally unacceptable, but I'm having a hard time figuring out what the team decided to do in fixing 720126. My personal preference is to not scroll if the find result starts anywhere on the visible window, but almost any of the proposed changes sound like they would be an improvement.

However, until I see the implementation I'm not sure I can consider my problem "solved".
