I run Windows 7 64-bit. I was preparing to install a new machine and, in the process, did something to cause Firefox to not display much of the formatting in all of the pages I visit. The missing information includes the background color and button outlines and color, and some button text. The problem affects Internet Explorer as well as Firefox.

I've set Firefox to allow pages to choose their own colors and I've reset Firefox multiple times. It appears to me that I've damaged something in the system levels to cause this.

Can you provide any repair suggestions?

I had not checked that. I followed the path, modified some settings. Unfortunately, no help.

However, due to another problem in this system, I restored the Operating System and all of the user files on the C: drive with a version prior to start of this behavior. By opening a new window, instead of just choosing the app tab for one of the sites in trouble, suddenly the problem seems to have disappeared!

Thank you cor-el and all who looked at this problem.

Make sure that you allow pages to choose their colors and that you haven't enabled High Contrast in the Accessibility settings.

Thanks for the reply, but I've set this and checked it several times. I've attached a PrtScr image of this page taken while writing this reply.

Did you also check the Accessibility setting in Windows?

AFAIK then you only get a display as shown in the screenshot if either the website colors and background in Firefox are disabled or you've chosen a high contrast them in Windows.

You can start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.
