Do you mean deleting emails from Thunderbird? You may want to direct that to Thunderbird Support.
Hello mainelady, if you have a Webmail (like Gmail, Yahoo! Mail etc) then when you delete an email the email goes to trash in the client, and you have to delete it from the trash to completely delete the email.

also, Update Firefox to the latest version, your Firefox 13.0 version is too old, unsupported and vulnerable.
