Firefox crashes
When trying to create a new profile in firefox I open terminal and as soon as I hit enter after typing in the " /applications/firefox.app/contents/macos/firefox-bin -profilemanager" It pops up a crash report. My fire fox seems to be running fine but I am unable to create a new profile. Iam sending this from another computer right now but would like an answer to why this is happening.

Hello Sandra69, any luck if close firefox from menu bar > Firefox menu > Quit Firefox, leave it a few seconds closed and open it again, and try again the command.
thank you
I have tried that many times as well as rebooting the Mac. Nothing has worked.
Hello Sandra69, try the next : /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -CreateProfile test

The ec8030f7-c20a-464f-9b0e-13a3a9e97384 is a extension folder, see in the next link:
Example
For example, if you've created a standalone application for Mac OS X that includes a plugin for Firefox, your installer would extract its extensions files to the following folder: /Library/Application Support/Mozilla/Extensions/{ec8030f7-c20a-464f-9b0e-13a3a9e97384}/

For the crashes :
- Enter about:crashes in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A Submitted Crash Reports list will appear, similar to the one shown below.
- Copy the 5 most recent Report IDs that start with bp- and paste them into your response here.

I do not use Mac.s, but if you try
- " /applications/firefox.app/contents/macos/firefox-bin"
i.e. without the -profilemanager argument.
Does firefox open ok as expected? - If they are Firefox crashes can you provide a couple of the Crash IDs
- Navigate to about:crashes look for Crash IDs beginning bp- and paste the strings into your next reply
- See Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly)
May I enquire: why are you trying to create a new profile is this because you already have a pre-existing Firefox problem you are trying to troubleshoot ?

@john No there is nothing wrong with my firefox that I can see. I need the second profile for work.
You can also do a check for corrupted and duplicate fonts and other font issues:

OK Sandra good to know it was not because of an existing problem.
Did you try the command with the -profilemanager part missing ? If the command-line is otherwise correct that will start up Firefox. If it does not then there is some thing wrong with the typing or filepath.
No doubt cor-elhas spotted something in your crash Ids

I have opened jus the Bin and it works fine. It seems only when I add the -profilemanager it crashes. So far still nothing has worked
I have the same problem when I use Imacros plugin. Any tips to reduce Firefox memory usage?
Hi UnlockBoot,
I amnot sure if you mean you have a crash,or a crash when attempting to use profile manager.
To get a good answer it is probably best to start your own thread
(As the guidelines suggest).
…. do not re-use existing threads started by others, even if they are seemingly on the same subject. ….
- Please use /questions/new
- Please try to follow the prompts and include troubleshooting info when you do that. (There is a green button to automate the process. Use that, or if you encounter problems doing so mention that in the new thread.)
- You may wish to post back here; afterwards; to confirm you started a new thread. Others may wish to follow it.
- Note this thread is /questions/981797 (permalink) (meaning)
- See this article for tips on memory use and problems
Firefox uses too much memory or CPU resources - How to fix
I have checked for corrupted and duplicate fonts and other font and everything seems fine. Any other ideas?
You can use one of these to start Firefox in Safe Mode:
- On Mac, hold down the Options key while starting Firefox
- https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Safe+Mode
If this helps to start Firefox then disable hardware acceleration (you need to close and restart Firefox).
- Firefox > Preferences > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
I am not having a problem starting fire fox. It starts up fine. What I am having problems with is making a new profile to run another fire fox for work. As I said when I try to create a new profile I type in the command " /applications/firefox.app/contents/macos/firefox-bin -profilemanager" and it pops up a crash report.
Sandra, Looks like we forgot about you !
Did you solve the problems ?
- Does it still crash when you try to use the profile manager ?
- Did you create the new profile needed for work ?
It would be possible to try using a standalone profile manager or manually creating a new profile.
Nothing has helped. Still can not make another profile. The problem is that work wants me to use fire fox 3.8.6. But of course on the home computer I use an up to date fire fox. So for right now I am running it on my PC not my Mac. Makes me a bit sad but I don't know what else to do at this point. If there is a way to manually create a profile I would like to know how?
Hi Sandra
I am not the best person to help you with this but I will at least comment and provide links to what I hope may be helpful articles. If necessary I will try to actively find someone more knowledgeable about Mac.s or maybe someone else will see this and comment further anyhow.
I am only running 64 bit versions of Firefox. I do not run fx3.6 . I do not use Mac.s these days.
- Old Firefox 3.6 is going to be 32 bit I think
- It may well use different profile files to those that current versions do. I imagine a fully created profile from a current Firefox Release will crash or otherwise cause Fx3.6 to fail.
- I presume you have installed Firefox 3.6 already ?
- Can you confirm it is installed and working ?
- If it is it already has a profile ?
- If it is not then you do not need a profile for it !
- Is it only Fx 3.6 that can not create new profiles ?
- ?? Presumably ?? It will need a 32 bit suitable install locations and 32bit libraries. (As I said I am not familiar with a Mac )
- Does the current Release Firefox create new profiles ok ?
- There is a standalone profile manager
- See https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Profile_Manager
For instructions and download links
- See https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Profile_Manager
- Manually creating profiles takes advantage of the fact that Firefox creates profiles if the profiles.ini file is correctly edited.
- Also note temporarily renaming profiles ini whilst Firefox is closed creates a new default folder when Firefox restarts.
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Creating_a_new_default_profile - Also see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Bypassing_the_Profile_Manager#Creating_a_profile_that_is_not_listed_in_the_Profile_Manager
But I suspect you would get a crash trying that.
Read the linked articles answer the questions and if necessary I will put out a shout for someone else to help you.
You could by the way mention to your Work IT person that there is a Firefox especially for Work use Firefox ESR. You never know they may upgrade.
Did you check for issues with the profiles.ini file (i.e. the permissions)?
