Thunderbird freezes during e-mail retrieval more than once..."Not Responding"

When I open T'bird, the mail loads quickly, but takes awhile before I can open he e-mails. Several times during reading even a few letters, I will get a "Not Responding" notice at the top of the page. This may happen for each letter I read. I can wait it out...

I don't think this happens when I send.

What anti-virus software are you using?
