How can I get rid of tabbed browsing? I positively hate it and none of the choices in tools get rid of them.
I was using an older version of FF because the newer versions had messed up private browsing and I had the option of deciding if I wanted tabbed browsing. I switched to a newer version because a lot of sites didn't work with the older version.
I went into tools - tabs and checked what I used to use not to get tabbed browsing. Doesn't work.
Please tell me how to get rid of tabbed browsing and how to switch back and forth to private and regular browsing without opening a new tab/window.
If I can't get rid of tabbed browsing I guess I'll muddle along with an older version.

I've never heard of a case where you could do that...however! I found a rather neat add-on you can use to open up a new tab in a Private Browsing mode.

In Firefox 23, as part of an effort to simplify the Firefox options set and facilitate future improvements to Firefox, the option to hide the tab bar was removed.
Fortunately, this can easily be resolved if you desire the keep tabs hidden. You can install "Hide tab bar with one tab", an extension hosted on Mozilla's add-ons site, which will restore the ability to hide the tab bar.
Select Options->tab> uncheck the option " Open new window instead a tab" then the firefox will open new windows instad of tabbed browsing
Thanks for such a speedy response - worked perfectly .. now, do you know of a way to switch to private browsing without a new window being open?

use ctrl + shift + p shortcut to switch for private browsing as per your specification
I know about the shortcut .. but in the newer version of FF when you do that you end up with a new window and the 'old' window is regular and the new window is private browsing. Before I realized what was happening I had 10 windows open.
Why does improved always mean 'we actually took away your choices'?
Please explain in detail.

Note that we don't have anything to do with Firefox development. The people who answer questions here, for the most part, are other Firefox users volunteering their time (like me), not Mozilla employees or Firefox developers.
If you want to leave feedback for Firefox developers, you can go to the Firefox Help menu and select Submit Feedback... or use this link. (You'll need to be on the latest version of Firefox to submit feedback). Your feedback gets collected at http://input.mozilla.org/, where a team of people read it and gather data about the most common issues.
Also, to avoid this thread turning into a back and forth argument about Firefox's UI, I'll be closing this thread as your initial problem was solved. If you feel the need to open a new thread for a new support request, please do so.
