multiple instances cause bsod when i click restart from a firefox crash

more options

i tend to have multiple instances of firefox open. right click -> open in new window. sometimes lots of them. lots. as high as 80-100 in the past.

the problem work like this. at some time firefox crashes. sometimes i get video distortion on an instance or instances.

when i restart firefox, i get oops something went wrong screen. i can restart my sessions or start anew.

occasionally, very occasionally, when i select restart my computer blue screens. this is from the event log:

   0x100000be (0xbd3de000, 0x1e79e021, 0xb07c3b38, 0x0000000c)

the computer is xp sp3, up to date with patches i have tried several different video cards with no change in behavior i have 4gb of memory on an intel i5 series processor.

of note: the number of instances that i can open before firefox starts going bonkers has been going down since versions late teens or 20 something.

this is getting annoying because this is the only blue screen i get. and it only happens when i click that button.

Trying to load 80 windows at once certainly sounds like a challenge. When you use multiple tabs in a smaller number of windows, Firefox only loads the active tab in each window, which reduces the load.

I don't wish you any more blue screens, but could you keep a digital camera or phone camera handy the next time you try this and grab a pic of the specific of the error? Hopefully that will provide more information about the type of failure.

Meanwhile, I suggest backing up sessionstore.js/sessionstore.bak in a safe location and restoring fewer windows to get back in business.

You can swap in the old session file later, or one of the data mining techniques in these posts to rescue the URLs from your backed up files (assuming you're keeping these windows open for later reference and don't require a live session to be maintained):
